The Ola Mau Essentials Story

 Built by Necessity

Ola Mau Essentials was created by owner, Katie, in 2021 after having to suspend her massage therapy practice to go on medical leave due to the beginning of a debilitating autoimmune disease.  She was suddenly stuck in her home on Maui, unable to go in the sun, drive, or fully function without help from her family and her partner, Thor.  She then developed multiple skin conditions and sensitivities on top of her new lifelong condition.  Her world changed radically, from surfing, hiking, gardening and being active with friends to pain, and isolation.

Once boredom set in, she felt the desire to learn new activities to do in her house on the good days.  She began gathering organic ingredients to make basic products that she needed.  Soon enough, she no longer purchased any products and instead fell in love with creating more complicated product recipes through testing pH levels and researching the science behind all kinds of useful everyday products.  After much trial and error, she discovered what her sensitive skin needed and made products that were gentle enough to use on herself but worked just as well as, and quite often better than, the things she used to buy.

So after over 2 years of struggling with her autoimmune disease and trying to keep a positive outlook, she finally found a combination of medications, treatments and products that have helped her return to some normalcy.  Although her health is still unpredictable at times, she is absolutely thrilled to continue making natural products for the home and body.  These specialty products are made in small batches so they are extra fresh and she understands how challenging it can be to have sensitivities or allergies so if possible, there is the option to add or leave out specific ingredients, by request.

Ola Mau Essentials offers a wide range of natural home and body items from just the basics to luxurious skin and beauty products for all skin types and homes.
